Review: When the horror thriller ” A Quiet Place “, directed byJohn Krasinski, who is mainly known as an actor, came to international cinemas in 2018, he managed one of the big cinematic surprises of the year. The post-apocalyptic family story, in which few words were spoken, delivered incredibly gripping, instinctively appealing entertainment that was well received by critics and moviegoers alike. It didn’t take long for a sequel to be confirmed. Especially in genre cinema, the sequels of unexpected hits tend to appear rather uninspired and superfluous. “A Quiet Place 2” is a pleasantly positive exception.
After an equally effective and meaningful flashback as an introduction, the film sets out to explore its own universe much further than was the case with its predecessor. You learn more about the possibilities of surviving in this world and the hopes that sustain the fighting spirit of many. Even if there are significantly more intermediate phases in which people speak, “A Quiet Place 2” is outrageously exciting and knows how to use its own premise for new, dark paths. Even if – as with the predecessor – the limits of logic are tested in favor of entertainment value, every decision made by the makers is understandable. The manual skills of the people involved also play a major role here, which makes reaching into the cinema-goer’s popcorn bag an insurmountable ordeal. Especially the grandiose sound design and a very well-thought-out cut stand out behind the camera.
