PREY (2022) Movie Review

Prey is a 2022 American sci-fi action horror film that serves as “an origin story about the Predator’s first journey to this planet.”

Directed by Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane) from a screenplay written by Patrick Aison. Produced by John Davis and John Fox (Jungle Cruise).

The 20th Century Studios production prequel stars Amber Midthunder as a female Comanche warrior who encounters an alien Predator. The movie also stars Dane DiLiegro, Stefany Mathias, Stormee Kipp and Dakota Beavers.

Director Dan Trachtenberg told Time Out: “I wanted the Predator to be scarier than we’ve seen it before. It’s intelligent and it has advanced technology, and that makes it even more difficult to take on.

He continues, “But because the movie is set 300 years in the past, those things need to feel a little bit older than we’ve seen before, but also still far more advanced than what we think our earthlings would be able to handle. I wanted to make sure the head was more proportional to the body. This predator is much slimmer and less armored than it’s ever been. It’s more ‘creature’. It’s still hulking and ferocious.”

Co-producer John Davis previously told Collider: “It goes back to what made the original Predator movie work. It’s the ingenuity of a human being who won’t give up, who’s able to observe and interpret, basically being able to beat a stronger, more powerful, well-armed force. It actually has more akin to The Revenant than it does any film in the Predator canon. You’ll know what I mean once you see it.”

He added: “I feel like the first one was a wonderful, interesting movie and I know what worked about it. I feel like we kind of never got back there again. We ended up in different places. I think this is a worthy complement to the first one. It’s going to be as good.”

Reviews:
Prey surprises in how different yet similar it feels to the franchise’s origins. It feels right at home with the mythology of the Predator universe yet stretches the boundaries in tone and scale. Soaring spectacle meets intimate storytelling, delivering one of the most solid entries in the franchise yet.” 4 out of 5, Bloody Disgusting

“Midthunder does some truly phenomenal work as Naru, proving that she will definitely be a name to look out for in the years to come. With Prey, director Dan Trachtenberg injects some new life into the Predator franchise. It’s a bold, exciting, and riveting prequel and is easily the best in the series since the first.” Caillou Pettis Movie Reviews

“I really don’t understand why something like Prey feels so revolutionary in this day-and-age, but an exceedingly competent blockbuster action film, with a unique perspective, wonderful performances, and a hard R-rating in 2022 feels like a damn miracle.” 4 out of 5, Elements of Madness

“Trachtenberg and his crew nailed the action – not only getting the Predator right, but figuring out how to make each and every new scene exciting as Naru and her fellow tribesmen attempt to defeat this massive monster […] In addition, it features gorgeous mountainous backdrops shot on location up in Canada by cinematographer Jeff Cutter. And a fantastic score by Sarah Schachner.” 9.5 out of 10, First Showing

“An excellent entry into the Predator canon with an outstanding leading performance, a masterful command of visual storytelling, stunning attention to detail and well-delivered terror. Naru is an excellent character wonderfully performed by Amber Midthunder who constantly impresses in her physicality and line delivery. The depiction of Naru highlights the command of visual storytelling.” 5 out of 5, Kneel Before Blog

” …the approach to Prey differs from any other installment in the franchise. It’s not the machismo of the original Schwarzenegger Predator, it’s not the camp of AvP or the attempt to remake the original with Predators. There are moments of beauty and quiet contemplation leading up to and amongst the carnage that elevates Prey beyond schlocky sci-fi horror.” 4 out of 5, The Lamplight Review

“Trachtenberg brings plenty of violent imagery to Prey, but he shies away from some of the Predator’s most brutal kills. It’s certainly more brutal than the 1987 original, but some longtime fans might want to see more. Regardless, Trachtenberg made a lot of the right decisions. Prey is the best Predator installment since the original while simultaneously crafting an engaging narrative of its own.” 4 out of 5, Showbiz Cheatsheet

“Key stunt rigger Ty Trand (Deadpool 2Cold Pursuit) and his team deserve a lot of credit for pulling off some amazing fight scenes including the climactic showdown between Naru and the Predator. Cinematographer Jeff Cutter (PaulOrphan) does a good job of capturing them and bringing out the inherent menace of the surroundings […] Unfortunately, some rather dodgy CGI blood and body parts take the edge off of these scenes.” 4 out of 5, Voices from the Balcony
