Spiritwalker (2020) Review
Spiritwalker is a 2020 Korean fantasy action film about a man who loses his memory and subsequently wakes up in a new body every twelve hours. Each time forced to discover who he is, he launches a desperate search to find himself, finally coming across a woman who claims to recognize him.
Written and directed by Jae-Keun Yoon making his feature debut. Produced by Won-seok Jang (The Devil’s Deal; Beasts Clawing at Straws; The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil; Memoirs of a Murderer).
The movie stars Yoon Kye Sang (윤계상), Park Yong Woo (박용우), Lim Ji Yeon (임지연), Gi-jun Hong, Sung-Wook Lee, Ji-hwan Park, and Seung-Mok Yoo.
Spiritwalker opens in the aftermath of a car crash. A man (Yoon Kye-sang, The Executioner, The Secret Mission) whose name may or may not be Ian lays on the ground injured while a homeless man (Yong-woo Park, Blood Rain, Nailed) rummages through the wreck looking for anything worth taking. Taken to the hospital, Ian seems to be suffering from amnesia, he has no memory and doesn’t even recognize his own reflection. However, when the police start asking about the gunshot wound in his shoulder he recognizes that it’s time for him to go.
“Spiritwalker comes to life as soon as the action sequences start. Hand-to-hand combat, gunfights, car chases, foot chases- you name it, Spiritwalker has got it and got it good. If the close-quarters fight sequence reminds of the similarly amnesia-themed The Bourne series, the large-scale action set pieces show off the production’s lavish scope.” Asian Movie Pulse
“Spiritwalker is intense, fun, and very entertaining. Fast-paced from the get-go, it barely slows down throughout the film. Its action scenes are all very good, but it is with the longer ones when the movie is taken to another level. These extended sequences work amazingly well, having a kind of John Wick feel…” Eastern Kicks
“It’s certainly a nifty gimmick as the audience shares successive bouts of disorientation but is never developed much beyond that. As such, Spiritwalker is intermittently clever yet ultimately rather disposable despite its overall technical proficiency.” Screen Daily
Spiritwalker had its world premiere at the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival in Spain on 17th October 2020. It has since been shown at the New York Asian Film Festival, Fantasy Filmfest in Germany and the London East Asia Film Festival.
Well Go USA will release Spiritwalker on Blu-ray, DVD and On-Demand (VOD) on April 12, 2022.
Spiritwalker will be remade for US audiences by Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who was behind the hit film franchises G.I. Joe and Transformers.
